FAQs
Do I need a GP referral to book an appointment?
No, you can refer yourself directly. Simply contact us by phone, email or through our online booking form and we will arrange your appointment. You do not need to see your GP first, although we are happy to liaise with your GP if you would like us to.
How is a psychiatrist different from a psychologist or therapist?
A psychiatrist is a fully qualified medical doctor who has completed specialist training in mental health. This means we can diagnose mental health conditions, prescribe and manage medication, and provide or coordinate a full package of care. Psychologists and therapists are not medical doctors and cannot prescribe medication, although they provide valuable talking therapies which we can recommend and work alongside.
What happens at my first appointment?
Your first appointment is a comprehensive psychiatric assessment, typically lasting 90 minutes. It is a relaxed, confidential conversation, there is no pressure and no rush. We will ask about your symptoms, how you have been feeling, your background and history, and what has brought you to us. At the end of the assessment you will receive a clear formulation, a diagnosis where appropriate, and a personalised treatment plan.
How long will I wait for an appointment?
We aim to offer timely appointments and endeavour to see new patients as quickly as possible. Contact us directly and we will advise on current availability.
Are appointments confidential?
Yes, everything you share with us is strictly confidential. We follow the professional and legal obligations of the General Medical Council (GMC). In rare circumstances where there is a serious and immediate risk of harm to you or others, we have a professional duty to act, but this is uncommon and we would always discuss this with you wherever possible.
Can I bring someone with me to my appointment?
Yes, you are very welcome to bring a family member, partner or friend for support if you would find this helpful. Please let us know when booking so we can accommodate this.
What is a medicolegal report and do you provide them?
A medicolegal psychiatric report is an expert report prepared for legal purposes, for example for criminal court proceedings, or immigration matters. Both our consultant psychiatrists have experience preparing such reports. Please contact us to discuss your requirements and we will advise on the scope, timescales, and fees.
How do I get a repeat prescription?
Repeat prescriptions are available to established patients. The fee is £40, which does not include the cost of the medication itself. Please contact us in advance to allow sufficient time for the prescription to be prepared.
Is the cost covered by health insurance providers?
Our doctors are not currently attached to any insurance provides. For insurance claims, we advise our patients to confirm directly with their insurance provider regarding coverage for assessment/management fees. At Psychiatry on Harley Street we only accept payment from patients. We then provide an invoice for submission to the appropriate insurance company.
Do you have facilities for bloods and ECGs?

Where blood tests or an ECG are required, referrals for blood tests and ECG investigations are made to our trusted partner providers. The cost of any recommended investigations will be outlined during your appointment, prior to any arrangements being made.

Do we provide shared care agreement with GPs?
Once ADHD titration is complete, Psychiatry On Harley Street can prepare a Shared Care Proposal (SCP) for your GP, this is charged at £99. If your GP accepts the SCP, they will take over the prescribing your ADHD medication under the NHS. As ADHD symptoms may change over time, follow-up appointments are required every twelve months for adults for a general review of symptoms and medications (ensuring a review of appropriate dosage and reviewing side-effects).
Please be aware that it is the GP that will need to accept the proposal for shared care and not all practices participate in this scheme.
What is your cancellation and refund policy?
We understand that circumstances can change. To ensure fairness to all patients and to make the most of our clinicians' time, the following cancellation policy applies:

More than 48 hours notice — a full refund will be issued
Between 24 and 48 hours notice — a 50% refund will be issued
Less than 24 hours notice — unfortunately we are unable to offer a refund

We kindly ask that you contact us as soon as possible if you need to cancel or reschedule your appointment. To cancel, please contact us by phone on 020 7467 8407 or by email at info@psychiatryonharleystreet.co.uk.
